在《亲爱的艾斯特》最初版本诞生15年后，现在，步行模拟这个类型已然在《伊迪·芬奇的秘密》（What Remains of Edith Finch）、《看火人》（Firewatch）等优秀作品的带领下逐渐发扬光大。过多赘述这个类型为何得以立足似乎已无必要，但这些步行模拟游戏为何令人着迷？它们的玩法看似可以被“步行”笼统概括，实则花样繁多。有的画面精细，质感逼真，有的却只有色块或是无规律的曲线；有的要在你耳边絮叨几分钟旁白，仍不罢休，有的却干脆连一句台词都没有。我们尝试找出它们背后的规律与共性，看看这些游戏是如何让玩家沉浸其中的。
在《史丹利的寓言》（The Stanley Parable）里，触发更多的旁白对话显然是不少玩家玩下去的理由之一，很显然，旁白的讥讽在大多数情况下并不能真正让玩家生气，却让玩家对旁白的评价产生了好奇与期待，进而尝试通过游戏行为触发更多反应——这就建立了一个寻求回馈的过程。

我们经常将步行模拟游戏的叙事形容为“感性且碎片化的”，但在每一个优秀的步行模拟游戏背后，都隐藏着将整个游戏串连在一起的主题。围绕着某一个基调，碎片化的叙事也能为玩家带来完整的体验。在《亲爱的艾斯特》的基础上，由同一个团队带来的游戏《Everybody's Gone to the Rapture》将场景演绎与环境的结合做到了极致。
与先前的线性流程不同，制作组The Chinese Room尝试将玩家探索的空间拓展到一个小镇之大的开放区域。剧情不再拥有明显的线性逻辑，在每个章节中，玩家可以自行选择探索哪一部分的场景与对应的故事。围绕着“小镇里的人去哪了”的疑问，关于外来的主角凯特和斯蒂芬夫妇与镇民的纠葛、矛盾与友谊也随之缓缓展开。
《Everybody's Gone to the Rapture》中对细节的苛求与恰到好处的剧情安排让空无一人的小镇变得鲜活，借助开放世界的形式将剧情的碎片织成一张人际关系的网络，也让玩家在不知不觉间被游戏展现的美学所震撼。

不得不承认的是，不少步行模拟游戏诞生的背后存在客观原因。因《亲爱的艾斯特》而走红的The Chinese Room工作室，当初选择制作步行模拟游戏在某种意义上是无奈之举。《亲爱的艾斯特》最开始只是一个大学里的实验项目，缺乏资金与技术的支持。后来广受好评的《Everybody's Gone to the Rapture》由索尼旗下的Sony Santa Monica监制，但开发中不可避免地出现了赶工期等情况。《Everybody's Gone to the Rapture》发售后，因为资金问题，The Chinese Room工作室不得不暂时歇业了一段时间，直到找到新的投资人，开始筹划更大的项目。工作室创始人Dan Pinchbeck说，他们并不想一直制作步行模拟和故事导向的游戏，想做更复杂、有更多内容，也更大型的游戏。
